How to make your own Coconut flour and Coconut milk (paleo, gluten free, low carb, diabetic friendly)
I feel so blessed that I was exposed to Paleo. It saved my life and it has saved the life of many other people. Food should be our medicine but unfortunately our food nowadays it is filled with chemical and ingredients that does more harm than anything else. In Paleo lifestyle, its all about being a chef in your own kitchen. Eating more at home than eating out. Controlling what goes into your body. You can still eat cakes and yummy desserts provided its made with healthy ingredients. For me coconut flour is the Holy Grail of all the flours. Its so sacred and soothes my soul with its natural exotic flavour and sweetness. It is low carb and high in healthy fats which our body needs for the well function of our brain and hormones. It is also higher in fiber and protein when compared to wheat flour. It is a better option than nut flour due to the Omega 6 PUFA contains in the nut or seed flour. Buying coconut flour can be hard due to its availability. I have not till now found coconut flour in any supermarket or health store here in Germany. I have tried buying it online and my my it cost me a fortune for a small bag of coconut flour. Learning how to make my coconut flour was the best thing what I have ever did for myself. I love my desserts, that's no denying about that. Life is too short not having a muffin or a chocolate cookies and I use coconut flour in my baking all the time. I feel instantly full after a cookie or a muffin. The high fat contain fills me up and curbs my hunger. It has the total opposite effect as compared to the normal white flour cookies or cakes.Eating the normal white flour desserts just spikes your insulin and makes you crave for more sugar and you feel hungry at all the time. It is a never ending vicious cycle.
Its so easy to make the flour and also the milk that once you start making it yourself then there is no turning back. Here I can normally find the coconut milk in Asian supermarkets but its very costly. Not only that, it also contains lots of additives such as guar gum and also BPA from the can. So making your own is the best way, on how you control on what goes into the body of your loved ones. Now lets began with the how to, step by step. First lets discuss on how to make the milk.....
Coconut milk
You will need :-
- 2 cups shredded dried coconut
- 8 cups of drinking water
- Soak the shredded dried coconut in 8 cups of drinking water over the night
- After that pour 1/2 of the shredded coconut mixture into the blender and blend for 30 seconds
- Pour the blended mixture on to a cheese cloth and squeeze the milk out in a clean bowl
- Transfer the dried pulp of the coconut on to baking tray lined with baking sheet.
- Repeat the same steps for the remaining half of the shredded coconut mixture.
- Once you have squeezed all the milk out, transfer the milk into a milk container or bottle.
- Store it in the fridge and you can use it for around 5-7 days.
You will need :-
- Pulp of the dried shredded coconut
- Once you have transferred the pulp of the dried shredded coconut on to the baking tray, baked or dehydrate it on very low heat for 2 hours more or less, depending on your oven.
- The pulp should be really dry before you start to blend them in batches.
- Blend the pulp till its very smooth and resembles a flour like consistency.
- Transfer it into an airtight container. Be sure to let the flour to cool down first before your transfer it into the container.
So by now you will realize that its so easy to make your own coconut milk and flour. With this recipe all You actually need is a bag of shredded dried coconut and nothing goes to waste. You get milk and as well as flour out of it. You can use the milk for baking, cooking Asian curries, or even for smoothies. Healthy living is so easy, we just need to know the right way to do it.
Can I use instant coconut milk as the substitute for shredded coconut?
ReplyDeleteTo make the flour u need the shredded dried part of the coconut flesh, you can use the instant coconut milk for the milk but not for the flour.
