Why are Iodine and Selenium so Important for a proper thyroid function

Part 1: Selenium and Thyroid More Good News (Jeffrey Dach MD, Jan 01 ...

Today I'm gonna discuss  about the infamous Iodine and his best friend Selenium. These two mineral are really crucial for the well being of a healthy thyroid function. Our Thyroid produces Hormone T4 which then needs to be converted in to the active form of the thyroid hormone T3.

The Letter T stands for Tyrosine and the number 4 and 3 are the amount of Iodine molecul attached to the tyrosine. So basically the thyroid hormones are made of Iodine. When your bodyis  lack in Iodine then you will develop an under active thyroid. If this situation continues then you might even develop Goiter.

Unfortunately nowadays we are so heavily exposed to the other toxic halides such as the fluoride, bromide and chloride. They look so identical to Iodine because they belong to the same group in the periodic table called halogens. Iodine have a tough time competing with the other halides when it comes to making thyroid hormones. The body look at all the halides the same. That's the reason why it is so crucial to eat food high in Iodine and supplement on it. Avoid food or drinks that contain the other toxic halogens. Use fluoride free salt, toothpaste, filtered water etc

Selenium is important for the conversion of T4 to T3. It also aids in the production glutathione which helps to prevent anti bodies against the thyroid gland which are responsible for damaging the thyroid gland with Hashimotos and Graves disease. Iodine on its own can be dangerous but take together with selenium, it works like magic. A simple blood test is good to know if you are deficient in Iodine and selenium.

I supplement with Lugol's Iodine 5% solution. I take 2 drops (12.5 mg) every morning in a glass of water together with  200 mcg selenium capsule. I take it in the morning after my breakfast. I also put a drop of it on my thyroid area around my neck. I prefer taking Lugol's solution as it is a combination of Iodine and Potassium Iodide. Our body needs both Iodine and Iodide and our thyroid glands needs Iodide in particular to produce thyroid hormones.

If you are also supplementing with vitamin C then I suggest you to take it at separate time because vitamin C interferes with the  absorption of Iodine and Iodide in the body. Iodine is also a very strong detoxing agent. If you want to get rid of heavy metals and toxins in the body then you need to do the Iodine protocol. To understand more on this topic, I suggest you to read the book from Dr.David Brownstein  Iodine: Why you need it, why you can't live without it

Iodine is not only beneficial for the thyroid but it is also amazing for fetus brain growth, killing cancer and tumor cells, treating gout and bladder infections. Actually the benefits of it is just a lot for me to write it all down.

If you plan to start on taking Iodine, I suggest you to start first with Magnesium, Selenium and vitamin C for the first month and slowly introducing Iodine at a low dosage the following month. Start with the 2% lugol's solution one drop a day and slowly make your way up to the 5% solution. As the 5% solution is more concentrated. You will experience some headache, diarrhea etc. That is the body detoxing Bromine out of your system. I personally had left sided headache which come and go through out the day for total 3 days. I even had break out on my face. I added a pinch of sea salt in my water and I drank that through out the day. This helps with the detoxing process.
